We've all seen small birds like robins bathing in puddles or bird baths in our backyards, but have you ever seen a mighty bald eagle do the same thing? Although research on this topic isn't conclusive, it is thought that birds exhibit this behavior either in rain, standing water or dry dirt as a critical process to maintain and protect their feathers which they rely on for flight and mating rituals. Bathing can help reduce parasites that harm them, keep oils at proper levels and possibly cool them off on hot days.

At first look we thought the eagle might have been injured but we've since seen this particular eagle hanging out on mounds of submerged vegetation in this Edgewood wetland complex where it likes to occasionally take a bath. We are always excited to share an interesting or unusual sighting with all of you!
